About
Each year on September 17, UMBC joins the nation in observing Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, commemorating the signing of the U.S. Constitution by delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787. Established by Congress in 2005, Constitution Day is an opportunity to reflect on the document that has shaped and continues to shape American governance, law, and political life.
The UMBC Institute of Politics began hosting Constitution Day programming in 2025. Consistent with its mission, the IoP brings a distinctive focus on the role of the states in American constitutional democracy.
Constitution Day programming typically consists of a keynote address from a Maryland leader followed by a panel discussion moderated by UMBC undergraduate students. These events are presented as part of the Social Sciences Forum.
